SHIMODA EMIKO Smile Series |

Shimoda Emiko, author of three thematic books and three collections, is one of the seminal figures of the '80's art scene in Japan. Her work can be found in dozens of forms, from gallery exhibits to record jackets, throughout Japan.
Ms. Shimoda is currently living in New York City, and has produced a series of 250 color portraits in oil. The subjects are friends, neighbors and strangers, all of whom find or have found themselves in the New York that she adopted in the early '90's. The only thing asked of them was a smile. A photo was snapped. Its points revealed, it was put aside, and the portrait begun. It was in the contemplation of these faces, many of which belong to recent residents like herself, that the meaning of home took bright and vivid form for her. |
Program InformationThe Smile Series completed a successful winter 1997 run at the Bruce R. Lewin Gallery, 136 Prince Street, New York City.
Weekend visitors to the show were photographed, and Ms. Shimoda is currently at work on the portraits that will emerge from that event.
She wishes to thank all who attended and participated, and is looking forward to exhibiting her newest paintings later this year. Inquiries, please contact (J/E) David G. Imber |
